In terms of Tourism at Health Resorts, Galicia is at the forefront in Spain thanks to the wide variety of possibilities and services it has to offer.
The Galician
Community has long been known as a region rich in hot springs, whose
waters were already used by the early settlers of this land.
The Romans later
identified these fountains and built the first infrastructures, many of
which are still standing today, side by side with modern buildings that
offer a wealth of facilities.
After the Middle Ages, it was during the XVIIIth century that the
modern concept of health resorts took hold, becoming a solid feature in
the XIXth century. At the end of the XIXth century health resorts in
Galicia underwent a remarkable evolution, with the pre-existing spas
being converted into hotel complexes.
The splendour of the Galician spas endured until the Spanish Civil War,
after which there was a decline in activity until the 1980’s, when
these resorts began to be in vogue again. Something for everyone
Tourism at Health Resorts in Galicia at the dawn of the century boasts
over 30 establishments and other hot springs distributed all over the
region and it is one of the most wideranging and varied offers to be
found in Spain. There are hotels that range from one to five stars,
making these spas suitable for everyone, providing a place where you
can combine activities related to health and the enjoyment of leisure
time.
Proof of the importance of health resorts in Galicia are the figures
related to occupancy, according to which, in the year 2003 the
different health spas in Galicia had provided lodging for 52.000 users,
resulting in earnings amounting to over 30 million euros, with an
occupancy of more than 85 per cent in the different resorts.
Thalassotherapy
Also in vogue in Galicia are the new thermal therapies such as
thalassotherapy or the therapeutic use of seawater. Thanks to the
quality of its sea waters, the Galician Community has one of the
greatest potentials for developing this type of health resort, oriented
not only towards the treatment of ailments but also as a leisure
activity.
At the present time, the Galician Community is involved in a process of renovating and enlarging its health resorts.
It is also introducing new thermal techniques to satisfy the rising
demand of users. Hence, in Galicia a new concept of health resorts has
come into being, which regards spas as a complex consisting of
fountains, lodging, health and therapeutic services in addition to
sports and leisure facilities as the basis of Tourism at Health
Resorts.
